Biography
Alfred B. Cheetham (also known as Alfred Cheetham or Alfred Buchanan Cheetham) was a British mariner and Antarctic explorer. He served as boatswain on Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1910–1913) and as third officer on Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod and Imperial Trans-Antarctic expeditions.
He appears as himself in expedition documentaries compiled from contemporary footage, including The Great White Silence (1924), directed by Herbert Ponting, and 90° South (1933). Cheetham was born on 6 May 1866 in Liverpool and died at sea on 22 August 1918 when his ship, SS Prunelle, was torpedoed in the North Sea during the First World War.
