Biography
Alice Pearce (1917–1966) was an American actress. She originated the role of Lucy Schmeeler in the Broadway musical On the Town (1944) and was the only member of the stage cast to reprise it in the 1949 film version, brought to Hollywood for the part by Gene Kelly.
Pearce appeared in supporting comedic roles in several films, including The Belle of New York (1952) and Kiss Me, Stupid (1964). From 1964 until her death she played the nosy neighbour Gladys Kravitz in the television sitcom Bewitched, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series posthumously after the second season.
She was educated at Sarah Lawrence College. Pearce was married twice: to composer John Rox from 1948 until his death in 1957, and to Paul Davis from 1964.
