Biography
Alonso Alvarez-Barreda (also credited as Alonso Alvarez or Alonso Alvarez Barreda) is a Mexican director of film and television. Born in Mexico City and raised in Tampico, he began with short films including Historia de un Letrero (2007), which won Best Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, and Crescendo (2011), a finalist for the Academy Awards. He was selected for the HBO Access Directing Fellowship in 2014.
Alvarez-Barreda has directed episodes of several television series, including eight episodes of Snowfall (2017–2023), for which three were submitted for Emmy consideration in the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series category. Other credits include American Horror Stories (2021), The Lincoln Lawyer (2022), The Mosquito Coast (2021), Kindred (2022), Hysteria! (2024) and The Drop: A Snowfall Saga (2026). He has also directed feature films such as The Wingwalker (2024).
