Fi1m perspective

Althea Vega is convincing when a character has immediate needs to attend to. Her work in Metro Manila makes us care about the family before the crime, and suggests an actor worth giving more room than a busy thriller allows.

In Metro Manila (2013), the family scenes do not feel like something to get through before the crime begins. Althea Vega, playing Mai Ramirez opposite Jake Macapagal, helps make them worth staying with. We cared about this family because the pair made its need to get by feel pressing, without waiting for the thriller to supply another danger. Vega's contribution is easy to underestimate in a film with so much plot to manage. It is a good reason to stay with Sean Ellis's sometimes overworked thriller.

Her early move from television bit parts into films included Joel Lamangan's Walang Kawala (2008), followed by sustained work in independent Philippine productions. She has often played women dealing with poverty or moral compromise, and Metro Manila belongs to that pattern of casting. For Ang Katiwala (2012), she was specifically requested for the role of a provincial wife. The appeal is understandable: she can make practical worries convincing without turning each one into a demonstration of suffering.

Ellis's approach also seems well suited to her: she has described being allowed to discover her own acting style on Metro Manila. The scenes with Macapagal bear that out, giving the two actors space to make the family's needs convincing without insisting on our admiration. The trouble comes when the film introduces another complication where staying with the people would be more persuasive. Vega helps sustain our interest, but she cannot make every new piece of crime plotting feel necessary.

Her later credits take her beyond social-realist drama, into suspense and action. She plays the younger version of Nora Aunor's character in Dementia (2014), and Dao in the action thriller General Commander (2019). We would welcome more parts that let her establish what a woman wants beyond getting through the day. Start with Metro Manila, provided the appeal of its family is enough to carry you through some overworked crime plotting.
