Biography
Andrew Timothy Birkin is an English screenwriter, film director and occasional actor. Born in London on 9 December 1945, he began his career in the 1970s with writing credits including the BBC mini-series The Lost Boys (1978), about J. M. Barrie, for which he received awards from the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and the Royal Television Society.
Birkin wrote the shooting script for The Name of the Rose (1986), in which he also appeared in a small acting role. He later wrote and directed Burning Secret (1988) and The Cement Garden (1993), the latter earning him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival. His other screenplay credits include King David (1985), The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006).
