Biography
Andrew Rudin is an American composer born on 10 April 1939 in Texas. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, principally with George Rochberg, and later taught music history, theory and composition at the Philadelphia Musical Academy (later part of the University of the Arts) for thirty-seven years, where he also directed the new music ensemble and headed the electronic music studio. He taught in the graduate division of the Juilliard School from 1981 to 1984.
Rudin is known for his early work in electronic music, including the album Tragoedia (1968) and its use in the soundtrack of Federico Fellini’s Satyricon (1969). His compositions include the operas The Innocent (1972) and Three Sisters, numerous ballets and dance scores created in collaboration with companies such as the Pennsylvania Ballet and choreographers including Alwin Nikolais, and orchestral and chamber works performed across the United States.
