Biography
Annemarie Jacir is a Palestinian director and writer. Born on 17 January 1974 in Bethlehem, she received an MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts in 2002 and has worked in independent cinema since the late 1990s. She is the founder of Philistine Films.
Her short film Like Twenty Impossibles (2003) was the first Arab short selected for the Cannes Film Festival and received a Student Academy Award nomination. Her feature debut Salt of This Sea (2008) was the first directed by a Palestinian woman and Palestine’s Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film. When I Saw You (2012) and Wajib (2017) were also selected as Palestine’s Oscar entries. She directed and wrote Palestine 36 (2025).
