Biography
Antoine Bourseiller (1930–2013) was a French actor, theatre director and opera director. Born in Paris, he studied under Jean Vilar and won the Concours des Jeunes Compagnies in 1960 with his production of Mélissa. He subsequently directed a number of Parisian and regional theatres, including the Studio des Champs-Élysées, the Centre dramatique national du Sud-Est and the Opéra de Nancy et de Lorraine.
Bourseiller appeared in several films, notably as the soldier Antoine in Agnès Varda’s Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) and, uncredited, as Brigitte Bardot’s director in Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin Féminin (1966). He also directed the feature Marie Soleil (1964). He received the Grand Prix du théâtre du Syndicat de la critique in 1963 and was appointed Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1993.
He was the father of costume designer Rosalie Varda from his relationship with Agnès Varda.
