Biography
Apsley Cherry-Garrard (1886–1959) was an English explorer and writer. He was one of the youngest members of Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica (1910–1913), joining as assistant zoologist to collect Emperor penguin eggs at Cape Crozier during the Antarctic winter.
After the expedition he served briefly in the First World War before being invalided home. Encouraged by his neighbour George Bernard Shaw, he wrote the memoir The Worst Journey in the World (1922), an account of the expedition widely regarded as a classic of polar literature. He appeared as himself in the 1924 documentary The Great White Silence.
