Fi1m perspective

Arata Iura does less with his face than almost any actor we can think of, and directors who want a man listening rather than performing keep coming back for it. Hirokazu Kore-eda found the use for that stillness first, in After Life.

In After Life (1999) Arata Iura plays Takashi Mochizuki, a caseworker in a peeling building where the newly dead must choose one memory to keep. The others on the staff are eager, or bored, or patiently weary; Mochizuki is reserved and careful, and that is the whole performance. He had come from fashion modelling and this was his first film, in a lead, and he behaves as if he has been told that acting is mostly waiting for the other person to finish. It suits the film exactly. The dead do the talking. He sits there and the camera has to come to him.

Kore-eda kept him. There is Distance (2001), Air Doll (2009) and a supporting part in Like Father, Like Son (2013), all of them films about people who are lonely in rooms with other people, which is Iura's natural weather. In between came the role that most Japanese audiences would name first: Makoto Tsukimoto, called Smile, the gifted and shut-off table-tennis player in Fumihiko Sori's Ping Pong (2002), where whatever is going on inside him arrives almost entirely through his expression. Then a turn towards harder material with Kōji Wakamatsu, most strikingly as Yukio Mishima in 11:25 The Day He Chose His Own Fate (2012), and work with Junji Sakamoto. He has carried on into the 2020s, in Golden Kamuy (2024) and in period television, while running a fashion label on the side.

The limits are the ones you would expect. An actor this quiet is easy to crowd, and in Ping Pong the louder players around him take more of the film than he does. His reputation sits in independent and arthouse work; the big mainstream lead has come rarely. We also noted, in After Life, that the staff's own story is the one thread the film leaves underwritten, so Mochizuki is asked to hold a great deal with very little to hold it with. He manages, just. The film moved us badly, and some of that was watching a man who has been in that building a long time decide, without a word of speech, that one of the cases matters to him.

If you have not seen him, start where he started. After Life is the best argument for what he does, and it is also the clearest case of a director knowing what to do with it. Everything after is a question of whether the film around him is prepared to wait.
