Biography
Attila Szalay is a cinematographer. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he immigrated to Canada as a child and studied film production and cinematography at Sheridan College in Ontario from 1979 to 1982. He began working as a camera assistant and, between 1990 and 1996, served as an A-camera operator on numerous projects.
Szalay became a director of photography in the mid-1990s. His credits include episodes of the series Smallville (2001), for which he received CSC nominations, The Pillars of the Earth (2010), The Bridge (2013–2014), Tyrant (2014), Get Shorty (2017–2019) and FBI: International (2021–). He has also worked on films such as The Suite Life Movie (2011) and second-unit photography on The Expendables 2 (2012).
Szalay won a Leo Award and a CSC Award for Iron Road (2009–2010). He received a Primetime Emmy nomination for The Pillars of the Earth and was invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers in 2013. He is also a member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and the Hungarian Society of Cinematographers, and has directed television episodes.
