Biography
Barbara Sukowa is a German actress and singer. Born on 2 February 1950 in Bremen, she trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Berlin and began her career in theatre before moving into film and television in the mid-1970s.
She is known for her collaborations with directors Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Margarethe von Trotta. Notable early roles include appearances in Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) and Lola (1981), and von Trotta's Marianne and Juliane (1981) and Rosa Luxemburg (1986), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. She has received three German Film Awards for Best Actress.
Later credits include Europa (1991), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), 12 Monkeys (2015) as Katarina Jones, Atomic Blonde (2017), Gloria Bell (2019), White Noise (2022), Air (2023) as Kathy Dassler, and Constellation (2024) as Irena Lysenko. She has also appeared in series such as Servant (2019–2022) and The Night Agent (2023).
