Biography
Beate Klarsfeld (born Beate Auguste Künzel) is a Franco-German activist and Nazi hunter. Born in Berlin in 1939, she moved to Paris in 1960, where she met and married Serge Klarsfeld in 1963. Together they documented Nazi crimes and pursued the prosecution of war criminals who had evaded justice after the Second World War.
The couple’s campaigns contributed to the trials of figures including Klaus Barbie. Klarsfeld appeared as herself in Marcel Ophüls’s 1988 documentary Hôtel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie, which examined Barbie’s crimes and postwar protection.
