Fi1m perspective

Belén Rueda makes maternal fear convincing without turning every scene into a plea for sympathy. Her work in The Orphanage is reason enough to seek her out, though the film could move faster.

Laura’s fear of failing a child is already unsettling before the supernatural needs to help in The Orphanage (2007). Belén Rueda gives her distress a consistency that keeps the person clear through the suspense. She lets grief remain present without making every scene a request for sympathy, a restraint we value in a film built to frighten us. We were moved more than we expected by her maternal anxiety, because the possibility of letting a child down felt frightening enough on its own. J. A. Bayona knows to give that feeling time before asking us to jump.

Her association with horror followed a substantial stretch in television, including Periodistas (1998–2002) and Los Serrano (2003–2007). Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside (2004) gave her a feature debut as Julia, before Laura became a breakthrough lead. The subsequent concentration on thrillers made repeated use of her ability to carry women through emotional or physical strain. It is worth remembering that the move into cinema began with drama.

Guillem Morales’s Julia’s Eyes (2010) gave her a physically and emotionally demanding central role, dealing with physical decline as she pursues a mystery. Her work with Oriol Paulo runs from The Body (2012) to the supporting part of Dr. Sardón in Mirage (2018). Both Bayona and Paulo cast her in their first features. The ensemble comedy Perfect Strangers (2017), in which she plays Eva, is a useful reminder not to treat the genre as the whole career.

Still, a persuasive lead performance cannot do the editor’s job. The Orphanage takes too long through its middle, and Rueda’s conviction does not make the familiar horror machinery less familiar. Her achievement is to keep Laura emotionally consistent without demanding that the film stop for us to admire her distress. We recommend it with that reservation about the pace. For a first encounter, make time for Bayona’s ghost story.
