Biography
Bernardino Zapponi (1927–2000) was an Italian screenwriter, novelist and journalist. Born in Rome, he began his career as a humourist for the satirical magazine Marc'Aurelio and later founded and directed the cult periodical Il Delatore (1958–1965). He made his first film contribution in 1951 and turned to screenwriting full time from the late 1960s.
Zapponi collaborated closely with Federico Fellini on seven projects, beginning with the episode "Toby Dammit" in Spirits of the Dead (1968) and including Satyricon (1969), Roma (1972), Fellini's Casanova (1976) and City of Women (1980). He received an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay of Fellini's Casanova. He also co-wrote Dario Argento's Deep Red (1975) and worked with directors including Dino Risi and Mario Monicelli.
