Biography
Bernhard Goetzke was a German stage and film actor. Born in Danzig in 1884, he trained as an actor and worked in theatres in Hagen and Dresden before joining Max Reinhardt’s companies in Berlin. He was a long-serving member of the Berlin Schillertheater.
Goetzke appeared in more than 130 films between 1917 and 1961. His film debut came in Robert Wiene’s Fear (1917). He became known for leading and prominent roles in Fritz Lang’s silent films, including Death in Destiny (1921), Prosecutor von Wenk in Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler (1922), and Volker von Alzeÿ in both parts of Die Nibelungen (1924). He also played the lead in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Mountain Eagle (1926). After the arrival of sound he took supporting roles in numerous productions.
