Biography
Bertrand Tavernier was a French film director, screenwriter and producer. He was born on 25 April 1941 in Lyon and died on 25 March 2021 in Sainte-Maxime.
He began in the film industry as an assistant director, press officer and critic before making his feature debut with The Watchmaker of St Paul (1974). Several of his early films starred Philippe Noiret, including The Judge and the Assassin (1976) and Coup de Torchon (1981). Later work encompassed a range of genres, such as 'Round Midnight (1986), Life and Nothing But (1989) and The Princess of Montpensier (2010).
Tavernier served as president of the Institut Lumière from its founding in 1982 until his death. He appeared as himself in the 1988 documentary Hôtel Terminus: The Life and Times of Klaus Barbie.
