Biography
Bill Fraser (1908–1987) was a Scottish actor who appeared on stage, in film and on television from the 1930s to the 1980s. Born William Simpson Fraser in Perth, he trained at Strathallan School and began his career as a bank clerk before making his stage debut in 1931. He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
Fraser became widely known for playing the irascible Sgt Claude Snudge in the sitcom The Army Game and its sequel series Bootsie and Snudge. His film roles included J. Montague Brown in The Barefoot Contessa (1954), the Port Commander in The Americanization of Emily (1964) and appearances in Up Pompeii (1971) and Eye of the Needle (1981). On television he played Judge Roger Bullingham in Rumpole of the Bailey and General Grugger in Doctor Who.
In 1986 he received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance for his stage role in When We Are Married. He was married to actress Pamela Cundell from 1981 until his death.
