Biography

Bill Gilmour is a Scottish television director. Born on 17 March 1939 in Peebles, he studied photography at Ealing Art College before beginning his career as a camera operator at Scottish Television in 1960. He later worked as a floor manager and joined Granada Television in 1967, where he started directing in 1972 and remained until 1989.

Gilmour directed numerous episodes of long-running British series, including over 150 episodes of Coronation Street between 1973 and 1987, as well as The Cuckoo Waltz (which he also produced), Crown Court, Strangers, Bulman, Cribb and The Spoils of War. He later directed episodes of EastEnders (1994–1996), Hollyoaks (1996) and the American soap Loving (1992–1993). He has also directed stage productions, including a 1980s Manchester production of Before Breakfast by Eugene O'Neill.
