Fi1m perspective

Candace Hutson gives Cera a child's stubbornness and directness, making the young dinosaur easy to recognise as a possible friend. We value that approach, though the squeakier delivery can wear down adult patience.

Cera sounds like a child who expects to get her own way. In Don Bluth’s The Land Before Time (1988), Candace Hutson voices the young triceratops with a stubbornness and cheek familiar from arguments between children. Her work belongs to a deliberately childlike ensemble, alongside Gabriel Damon’s Littlefoot and Judith Barsi’s Ducky. The voices help these small travellers seem like possible friends, which matters in a film that gives them convincing reasons to be frightened. Cera’s bravery matters too: there is more to this young triceratops than the determination to have her own way.

We grew impatient during the squeakier stretches, because the delivery distracted us from the creatures the animation had already made convincing. That reservation concerns the ensemble rather than Hutson alone, and it is worth keeping the intended audience in mind. Her Cera has the forthrightness that can make an animated creature seem like someone a younger child might know. The performance does useful work in making the companionship accessible, even when we would prefer a little less insistence. Younger children are more likely to accept that emphasis, and the film is right to make their way into the story a priority.

Hutson’s early work moved between voice roles and live-action parts, including Hider in the House (1989) and the child lead in Dolly Dearest (1991). Television gave her a longer ensemble role as Molly Newton in Evening Shade (1991–1994), appearing in 75 episodes. She also returned as Cera for the first three direct-to-video sequels, through 1996. That continuation is the clearest thread through the work: a recognisable character sustained across several films. It is not a reason to treat all those films as equally worth seeing.

The original The Land Before Time remains the sensible place to start with Hutson. Bluth’s vivid animation gives the child voices a setting in which their directness makes sense, and Cera’s strong will gives Hutson more to do than sound endearing. The heavy lessons can grate too, though there is enough danger in the adventure to keep us concerned about the small travellers. Choose it for a family evening, rather than an evening of peace and quiet.
