Biography
Carlos Saura was a Spanish film director, screenwriter and photographer. He was born on 4 January 1932 in Huesca, Spain, and died on 10 February 2023.
Saura began making documentary shorts in the 1950s. His feature films include The Hunt (1966), Peppermint Frappé (1967), Ana and the Wolves (1973), Cousin Angelica (1974) and Cria! (1976), on which he served as director and screenwriter. He later directed the flamenco trilogy Blood Wedding (1981), Carmen (1983) and El amor brujo (1986).
His films received awards including Special Jury prizes at Cannes for Cousin Angelica and Cria!, a Golden Bear at Berlin for Faster, Faster (1981), and multiple Goyas. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for Mama Turns 100 (1979).
