Biography
Catherine Ruelle is a French writer, journalist and film critic. After studying political science and history in Paris, she joined Radio France in 1969 and moved to what became RFI in 1971, where she worked as a journalist before specialising in cinema from 1973. She produced radio programmes on film and contributed criticism to publications including Afrique-Asie and Le Monde diplomatique.
Ruelle is credited as a collaborating writer on the 1986 film The Decline of the American Empire. She founded the association Racines in 1984, which she has presided over since, and has organised festivals and events dedicated to cinemas of the Black world. She has co-authored books on African cinema and served on juries at international festivals including Fespaco.
