Biography
Charles Butterworth (also credited as Charles Edward Butterworth or Charlie Butterworth) was an American stage and film actor. Born in South Bend, Indiana, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a law degree and worked as a newspaper reporter before appearing on Broadway in the mid-1920s. He made his film debut in 1930 and specialised in comedic supporting roles, often playing reticent or befuddled characters.
Butterworth is known for his performance as Count de Savignac in the musical Love Me Tonight (1932) and as Mr Chisholm in Second Chorus (1941). Other notable film credits include This Is the Army (1943). He was married to actress Ethel Kenyon from 1932 until their divorce in 1939. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
