Biography
Charles Hawtrey, born George Frederick Joffre Hartree, was an English actor, comedian and singer. He trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and began performing as a boy soprano, making records and working in radio before entering theatre and film.
He appeared in more than seventy films from the 1930s onwards, including an uncredited role as a studious youth in Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage (1936) and supporting parts in Will Hay comedies such as Good Morning, Boys (1937). He became best known for his work in the Carry On series, appearing in twenty-three films between 1958 and 1972, among them Carry On Cleo (1964), Carry On Screaming! (1966), Carry On Up the Khyber (1968) and Carry On Camping (1969).
Hawtrey also worked extensively in theatre as an actor and director. He died on 27 October 1988.
