Biography

Charles Hyatt (14 February 1931 – 1 January 2007) was a Jamaican actor, playwright, director, author and broadcaster. Born in Kingston, he began his career in Jamaican theatre and received a British Council bursary that took him to the Theatre Royal, Windsor, in 1960. He appeared in numerous British stage, television and film productions from the 1960s onwards.

Hyatt made his film debut in A High Wind in Jamaica (1965). His screen credits include The Bushbaby (1969), Crossplot (1969), Freelance (1971), Love Thy Neighbour (1973), Club Paradise (1986), The Mighty Quinn (1989), Cool Runnings (1993) as Whitby Bevil, Sr., and Almost Heaven (2005). He also narrated episodes of Jackanory and wrote for radio.

He received Jamaica's Order of Distinction, the Institute of Jamaica Centenary Medal and the silver Musgrave Medal. Hyatt was married twice and had four children, including actress Michael Hyatt.
