Biography
Charles Magnusson (1878–1948) was a Swedish film producer, director and screenwriter. He began as a professional photographer in 1894 and worked as a newsreel cameraman from 1905. In 1909 he became managing director of Svenska Biografteatern, Sweden’s first film studio, which he relocated from Kristianstad to Stockholm in 1911.
Magnusson recruited directors Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller in 1912 and oversaw the 1919 merger that created Svensk Filmindustri, serving as its production chief until his retirement in 1928. He produced several key Swedish silent films, including A Man There Was (1917), The Outlaw and His Wife (1918), Sir Arne’s Treasure (1919) and The Phantom Carriage (1921), all directed by Sjöström.
