Biography
Charlotte Greenwood, also credited as Frances Charlotte Greenwood, was an American actress and dancer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1890, she began her career in vaudeville and became known for her height and high kicks. She starred in a series of Broadway musical comedies as the character Letty and later appeared in Cole Porter's Out of This World (1950).
Greenwood appeared in numerous films, including The Gang's All Here (1943). The role of Aunt Eller in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! was written with her in mind, but film commitments prevented her from playing it on Broadway in 1943; she portrayed the character in the 1955 film adaptation. She retired from acting in the mid-1950s and died in Los Angeles in 1977.
