Biography
Charly Steinberger, also credited as Karl Steinberger, was an Austrian cinematographer. Born on 3 November 1937 in Schalchen, Austria, he began as a photographer, then worked as a camera assistant before becoming a director of photography from the mid-1960s, initially on television films. He died on 27 March 2019 in Munich, Germany.
He is best known for his cinematography on Jerzy Skolimowski’s Deep End (1970), and collaborated again with the director on King, Queen, Knave (1972) and The Lightship (1985). In Germany he shot many adaptations of Johannes Mario Simmel novels directed by Alfred Vohrer in the 1970s. Steinberger directed one feature, the 1975 comedy Monika and the Sixteen Year Olds. He received the Filmband in Gold in 1974 for his work on two films and was a member of the BVK until 2010.
He was married to actress Susanne Uhlen until their divorce in 1984.
