Chase Stokes makes the treasure hunt in Outer Banks feel urgent and its friendships worth staying for. We like him in an ensemble; the next test is finding roles that ask more of him than keeping an adventure moving.

In Outer Banks (2020), Chase Stokes plays John B. Routledge as someone whose search cannot wait. That urgency helps a teenage treasure hunt through plotting which needs a fair amount of indulgence. He gives the group someone to follow without making the other actors feel like bystanders. We enjoyed spending time with these friends because Stokes and his fellow actors made their attachment to one another convincing. The clues were not always the reason to keep watching.
Madelyn Cline’s Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey’s Kiara Carrera, Jonathan Daviss’s Pope Heyward and Rudy Pankow’s JJ Maybank all matter to that effect. Stokes benefits from having people around him who seem worth the trouble, and the series benefits from a lead who belongs among them. The limitation is in the writing: too often, these actors have only an immediate problem to play. That leaves less room to discover how John B. behaves when there is nothing pressing to do. We would hesitate to mistake a script’s narrow demands for the limits of an actor.
The move to larger roles came through television, from small parts including Stranger Things (2016) to the lead in Outer Banks. Chemistry reads helped him secure the Outer Banks role, and we can see why the casting process mattered here: the series needs us to believe in the friends as a group before it can ask us to follow their adventures. His subsequent film roles have taken him into military action and romance. He plays Peris in Uglies (2024) and Captain Edward Brockman in the military thriller Valiant One (2025). Nick Cassavetes directs him as Rule Archer in Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (2025), giving him a romantic lead away from the treasure hunt.
Stokes is well suited to physically capable characters who also have doubts about themselves. What we want now is a role that gives him time to play those doubts, rather than sending him straight towards the next obstacle. A military lead or a change of setting cannot, on its own, supply that. Start with Outer Banks for the company, and allow the plotting a little more patience than it deserves.
Biography
Chase Stokes is an American actor. Born James Alexander Chase Stokes on 16 September 1992 in Annapolis, Maryland, he is known for his role as John B. Routledge in the Netflix series Outer Banks (2020–2026).
Stokes began acting in 2015. He appeared in small roles including Reed in Stranger Things (2016), Russell Bennett in the television film The Beach House (2018) and Finn in The First (2018). He studied at Valencia College, the University of Central Florida and Seminole State College.
