Chete Lera brought a gravelly voice and credible authority to supporting parts. We value his naturalistic ensemble work, particularly when a film needs a professional figure we can believe.

Chete Lera’s Antonio, the psychiatrist in Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes (1997), is a useful place to start: a professional figure whose credibility matters in a film built on uncertainty. Lera’s deep, gravelly voice suits that authority, and the casting makes good use of it. We were absorbed by the film because Amenábar makes uncertainty exciting, then disappointed by explanations that cannot match the ingenuity of the guessing. Eduardo Noriega’s controlled central performance holds it together; Lera makes the psychiatrist credible enough for his questions to matter.
His mid-1990s emergence put him among the independent Spanish filmmakers of the period. Julio Medem’s La ardilla roja (1993) helped establish him, while Fernando León de Aranoa’s Familia (1997) formed part of the same breakthrough. León de Aranoa used him again as a police inspector in Barrio (1998), a clear example of the professional authority for which he was often cast. We would be wary of treating those jobs as interchangeable: a psychiatrist and a policeman have different reasons for wanting somebody to talk.
Smoking Room (2002), with Lera as Puig, offers another way into his work through a dialogue-heavy ensemble and his naturalistic delivery. We value this side of his acting as much as the authority that made him a persuasive psychiatrist. His long commitment to theatre ran alongside the screen roles, and his vocal technique suited intimate exchanges as well as larger parts. That gives us a reason to look beyond the familiar casting as inspectors, professionals and company men, and listen to how he handles dialogue.
Supporting film roles and recurring television appearances continued through the 2000s and 2010s. His later film work included Edmundo Figueroa in Rodrigo Cortés’ Concursante (2007), another supporting assignment rather than a move towards leading roles. Our reservation with Open Your Eyes remains its overcomplication, so the recommendation comes with a caveat. Start there if psychological thrillers are your preference, and give Antonio some attention before the film gets busy explaining itself.
Biography
Chete Lera (born Ramón Mariano Fernández Lera) was a Spanish actor. He began a stage career in the late 1970s after working as an aeronautic engineer, pilot and bank teller, and studying psychology. He moved to Madrid from Galicia, where he had spent his childhood.
Lera appeared in films including The Red Squirrel (1993), Secrets of the Heart (1997), Familia (1996), Open Your Eyes (1997) as the psychiatrist Antonio, Barrio (1998) and Smoking Room (2002). His television credits include The Ministry of Time (2015) and Mira lo que has hecho (2018–2020). He shared the Silver Biznaga for Best Actor at the 2002 Málaga Film Festival for the ensemble of Smoking Room. He died in 2022 following a car accident.
