Biography
Chief Yowlachie, born Daniel Simmons on 15 August 1891 on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington, was a Native American actor of Puyallup heritage. He began his performing career as an opera singer before appearing in films from the mid-1920s, often in Westerns as Native American characters, both credited and uncredited.
He is known for his role as Quo in the 1948 Western Red River. Other film credits include The Paleface (1948) as Chief Yellow Feather, Winchester '73 (1950), Yellow Sky (1948), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), The Spirit of St. Louis (1957) and The FBI Story (1959). He also appeared in television episodes of series such as The Lone Ranger, The Virginian and The Tall Man, and had a role as Geronimo in the series Stories of the Century.
Yowlachie died on 7 March 1966 in Los Angeles, California.
