Biography
Chris Smith is an American documentary filmmaker. Born on 20 May 1970 in Rahway, New Jersey, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Graduate Film Program, where he completed his first film, American Job (1996).
Smith is best known for directing American Movie (1999), which won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. His subsequent credits include The Yes Men (2003), Collapse (2009), Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017), Fyre (2019), Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal (2021), WHAM! (2023, also as producer) and Mr. McMahon (2024). He directed The Widower: 'Til Death Do Us Part (2026).
