Biography
Daniel Yost is a writer, director and producer. He received a screenplay credit, shared with Gus Van Sant, on the 1989 film Drugstore Cowboy, which was based on an unpublished novel by James Fogle.
Yost began his career as a sports writer in Portland, Oregon, before moving into freelance journalism and then screenwriting. He worked closely with Fogle, editing and advocating for his manuscripts, and helped secure publication of the Drugstore Cowboy novel after the film’s release. The screenplay received awards including Best Screenplay from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and an Independent Spirit Award.
Yost has written, directed and produced several later independent features, including Shooting Nick (2004), Hank, Aaron and the Alien from Outer Space (2009) and A Star for Rose (2013). He also wrote the sequel novel Drugstore Cowboy: Backside of a Mirror, published in 2014.
