Biography
Danylo Demutsky (also credited as Daniil Demutsky) was a Ukrainian cinematographer and photographer. Born on 16 July 1893 in Okhmativ, Kyiv gubernia, in the Russian Empire, he died on 7 May 1954 in Kyiv.
He began as a photographer, receiving a gold medal at the 1925 International Exhibition of Applied Arts in Paris, before entering film at the Odesa Film Studio in 1925. From the late 1920s he collaborated with director Oleksandr Dovzhenko on Arsenal (1929), Earth (1930) and Ivan (1932), contributing to a distinctive poetic style in early Ukrainian cinema. In the early 1930s he was exiled to Central Asia and barred from film work until 1943. After the Second World War he returned to Kyiv Film Studio, where his credits included Secret Agent (1947), In Peaceful Days (1950) and Taras Shevchenko (1951); the latter earned a prize for cinematography at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
