Biography

David Auburn is an American playwright, screenwriter and theatre director. He was born on 30 November 1969 in Chicago and grew up partly in Ohio and Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a BA in English literature in 1991 and later attended the Juilliard School’s playwriting programme.

Auburn is best known for his play Proof, which premiered in 2000 and won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play. He wrote the screenplay for the 2005 film adaptation. His other screenplays include The Lake House (2006), The Girl in the Park (2007, which he also directed), Georgetown (2019) and the story for Charlie’s Angels (2019). His first full-length play, Skyscraper, was produced off-Broadway in 1997. He has directed stage productions and serves as associate artistic director of the Berkshire Theatre Group.
