He presented the first two series of the children's programme Rainbow in 1972 before concentrating on writing. His 1978 novel Walter, which won the Hawthornden Prize, was adapted by Cook into a television film directed by Stephen Frears and starring Ian McKellen; it was screened on Channel 4's opening night in 1982.
