Biography

David Nobbs was an English comedy writer and novelist. He created and wrote the BBC sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976–79), adapted from his own novels, and later wrote the follow-up series The Legacy of Reginald Perrin (1996) and a 2009 remake.

Born in Orpington, Kent, Nobbs was educated at Marlborough College and St John's College, Cambridge. He worked as a reporter for the Sheffield Star before beginning his comedy career writing for That Was the Week That Was in the early 1960s. He contributed material to performers including Frankie Howerd, Les Dawson, Kenneth Williams and The Two Ronnies. Other notable works include the sitcom A Bit of a Do (1989) and the Henry Pratt series of novels. He published an autobiography, I Didn't Get Where I Am Today, in 2003.
