Denise Welch plays women who say what everyone else is only thinking, in a North-East accent she has kept. Given a page, it is a pleasure. Given a paragraph, as in Forever Home, she is handed an attitude rather than a life.

In Forever Home (2026) Denise Welch is Moira Crottie, mother to Carol, and she plays her as she has played most things: fast, loud and quite sure she is right. Welch has said of the part, "Moira loves Carol in the only way that Moira can love somebody. She loves herself first and then she loves her daughter," and that is the whole performance, a woman who gets her line in first and lets the feeling arrive afterwards, if it arrives at all. The one-liners land. What is behind them is harder to see, and that is not entirely her fault.
She has been doing this on British television since the early 1980s. A guest part in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1986) came early; Soldier Soldier (1993–1995), in which she played Marsha Stubbs, the civilian lead in an army drama, made her a face people knew. Then came Coronation Street (1997–2000) and Natalie Barnes, a scheming divorcee who ends up running the Rovers, 489 episodes of her, and with it the kind of recognition that does not go away. Waterloo Road (2006–2010) gave her Steph Haydock, a teacher she went back to in 2026, and Hollyoaks (2021–2022) completed the set of the big soaps. Alongside all of it, for the best part of two decades, she sat on the Loose Women panel.
That last fact matters to the acting, and Welch has said so herself: a persona that opinionated and that public changes the parts you are offered. Writers cast the woman they think they know. The edge, the humour and the moral untidiness are all there in Natalie Barnes and Steph Haydock, but those parts ran long enough for the traits to become a person. In Forever Home she is one of several supporting players given, as we said at the time, attitudes rather than lives, and we found that frustrating, because a performer who has carried hundreds of episodes can plainly do more than deliver a gossip's line and step back. The series was filmed in Northumberland with a largely Geordie crew, and she fits it; the script simply does not fit her.
She has defended soap work against an industry that looks down on it, and on the evidence she is right to. Keeping a character alive across years, then being asked back sixteen years later and insisting she has not gone quiet in the meantime, is a skill, and not one that transfers to a six-part domestic mystery where nobody has time to explain why the mother is like that. Our advice to anyone casting her is the obvious one: write the life, not just the mouth. Our advice to the viewer is to wait for Steph Haydock, where the pages, at least, are hers.

Denise Welch is an English actress and television personality. She trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and began her career in theatre before moving into television in the 1980s.
Welch is known for her role as Natalie Barnes in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street (1997–2000), Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road (2006–2010, 2026), and Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks (2021–2022). She has also appeared in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1986), Emmerdale (2024) and Casualty, and is a regular panellist on the ITV chat show Loose Women. In 2026 she played Moira Crottie in the Channel 5 series Forever Home.
