Biography
Derek Jarman was an English film director, screenwriter, production designer and artist. Born in 1942, he studied at King's College London and the Slade School of Art. He began his career in stage and production design, including work on Ken Russell's The Devils (1971).
Jarman made his directorial debut with Sebastiane (1976). His subsequent films include Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), for which he also wrote the screenplay, The Last of England (1987), Edward II (1991), Wittgenstein (1993) and Blue (1993). He frequently collaborated with actors including Tilda Swinton and worked in experimental and low-budget formats.
Diagnosed with HIV in 1986, Jarman died in London in 1994.
