Biography
Doris Day was an American actress and singer. Born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, she began her career as a big-band vocalist in the 1940s. Her first hit recording was "Sentimental Journey" in 1945, and she made her film debut in Romance on the High Seas (1948).
She appeared in 39 films, including the Hitchcock thriller The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), in which she played Jo McKenna and performed the Oscar-winning song "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)". Other notable roles include Calamity Jane (1953), Pillow Talk (1959) and That Touch of Mink (1962). Day received an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and was the top-ranking female box-office star of her era. She retired from acting in the 1970s and later became known for her animal-rights work.
