Fi1m perspective

Douce the Bear gives The Bear much of its appeal through a cub’s vulnerability. We recommend it, though the filmmakers sometimes spell out feelings that the cub’s struggle to survive has already made clear.

The cub in The Bear (1988) has enough to do staying alive without having to be adorable as well. Credited as Youk the Bear Cub, Douce gives Jean-Jacques Annaud’s animal adventure its most immediate appeal, and the film rewards the attention we pay to her. We were moved by the effort it takes this small animal simply to survive. The bears do not need quite so much help being sympathetic.

This was Douce’s only screen credit, so there is no sequence of later roles against which to set it. There is also a limit to what we can claim for an individual animal performance: several cubs were used, and the finished Youk cannot be treated as Douce’s work alone. Trainer Clint Youngreen worked on naturalistic behaviours, including foraging and interaction with Bart the Bear. That knowledge need not spoil the pleasure, but it should keep us from crediting the bear with decisions made by the people around her.

Philippe Rousselot’s location photography helps by keeping the bears interesting within their surroundings, giving us reasons to look beyond the animals without losing interest in them. The landscape matters because we can see the cub’s place within it. Bart, playing the adult Kodiak bear, has a physical authority that makes the difference between the two animals dramatically useful. Annaud’s decision to spend so much time with them pays off here: their different sizes and behaviour give us plenty to watch without a human character having to explain them.

Noëlle Boisson’s editing does the harder-to-notice work of turning animal behaviour into scenes we can follow. For much of the film, the connection between one response and the next feels clear without being forced. Sometimes it is too neat, and we can feel an emotion being assigned to the cub before we have had time to watch him. That is where the sentiment becomes an irritation, because the film leaves too little room for an animal to behave without an obvious human explanation. Come for the bears, and be prepared to overlook some unnecessary encouragement to love them.
