Biography
Edgar Bergen (born Edgar John Berggren, 16 February 1903 – 30 September 1978) was an American ventriloquist, comedian and actor. He was best known for his ventriloquist characters Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd.
Bergen began performing in vaudeville and became a radio star with The Edgar Bergen-Charlie McCarthy Show, which ran from 1937 to 1957. He appeared in films including Fun and Fancy Free (1947) and I Remember Mama (1948). His final screen role was as himself with Charlie McCarthy in The Muppet Movie (1979); the film was dedicated to his memory.
He was the father of actress Candice Bergen.
