Biography
Edgar Evans was a Welsh Royal Navy petty officer and Antarctic explorer. He served on HMS Majestic, where he met Robert Falcon Scott, and joined Scott's Discovery expedition in 1901–1904 before being selected for the polar party on the Terra Nova expedition of 1910–1912.
Evans reached the South Pole with Scott, Henry Robertson Bowers, Lawrence Oates and Edward Adrian Wilson on 17 January 1912. He died on 17 February 1912 near the Beardmore Glacier during the return journey. Archive footage of Evans from the expedition appears in the 1924 documentary The Great White Silence.
