Biography
Edgar Reitz is a German film director, screenwriter and producer. Born in 1932 in Morbach in the Hunsrück region, he studied German, journalism, art history and theatre in Munich before working as a camera, editing and production assistant from 1953. He was a signatory of the 1962 Oberhausen Manifesto and co-founded the Institute for Film Design at the Ulm School of Design, where he taught.
Reitz is best known for the Heimat series, beginning with the eleven-part Heimat (1984), on which he served as director, writer, story author, screenwriter, creator and producer. The epic chronicle of life in a fictional Hunsrück village spans much of the twentieth century and was followed by further instalments, including Die zweite Heimat (1992) and Heimat 3 (2004), as well as the feature Home from Home – Chronicle of a Vision (2013). He has been Professor of Film at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe since 1995 and has received multiple German Film Awards and honours for his body of work.
