Biography
Edith Atwater was an American stage, film and television actress. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she made her Broadway debut in 1933 and appeared in numerous productions, including a starring role in the 1939 play The Man Who Came to Dinner.
Her film credits include Meg Cameron in The Body Snatcher (1945), Mary in Sweet Smell of Success (1957), Mrs Fields in Strait-Jacket (1964), Mrs Floyd in True Grit (1969) and Mrs Clay in Family Plot (1976). On television she appeared in series such as The Rockford Files, Peyton Place and Knots Landing.
Atwater was married to actors Hugh Marlowe and Kent Smith.
