Biography
Edna Best (born Edna Clara Best) was a British actress. She was born on 3 March 1900 in Hove, Sussex, and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She made her stage debut in 1917 in a production of Charley's Aunt and became known on the London stage, notably for her performance in The Constant Nymph.
Best entered films in the 1920s and appeared in both British and Hollywood productions. She is known for her roles as Jill Lawrence in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Margit Brandt in Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939), and Martha Huggins in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947). She also appeared in Swiss Family Robinson (1940) and received an Emmy nomination in 1957 for a television performance in This Happy Breed. Best was married three times, including to actor Herbert Marshall, and had three children, one of whom was actress Sarah Marshall. She died on 18 September 1974 in Geneva, Switzerland.
