Biography
Eduard von Winterstein (also credited as Eduard V. Winterstein and Eduard Clemens Freiherr von Wangenheim) was an Austrian-German actor. Born on 1 August 1871 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria), he received acting lessons from his mother, a stage actress, and made his professional debut in 1889 at the theatre in Gera. He went on to a long career in German theatre, appearing at venues including the Schiller Theater and, from the 1920s, working with Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.
Winterstein began appearing in films from 1913 and became known for supporting roles as authority figures such as generals, judges and directors. His credits include the school headmaster in The Blue Angel (1930), Caliph in Destiny (1921), Vater Münchhausen in Münchhausen (1943) and Weimann in The Silent Star (1960). He also appeared in The Man Who Was Sherlock Holmes (1937).
After the Second World War he remained in East Berlin as a member of the Deutsches Theater ensemble. He died on 22 July 1961 in East Berlin.
