Eduardo Noriega is persuasive when a thriller needs us to keep worrying about a man we cannot quite understand. We value his restraint, though the familiar casting of a handsome face with something darker underneath can become limiting.

In Open Your Eyes (1997), Eduardo Noriega keeps his character recognisable while the film repeatedly changes what we think we know about him. He gives us a person to follow through a plot that could easily exhaust our patience. We rate the performance because it lets the uncertainty do its work without insisting on our sympathy at every turn. For an actor frequently cast in thrillers, knowing how much to hold back is a considerable asset.
Alejandro Amenábar gave him his breakthrough with Thesis (1996), casting him as Bosco, before Open Your Eyes established the partnership further. Those early roles helped fix an enduring pattern of casting: handsome men with something troubled or threatening beneath their appearance. It gives Noriega an immediate place in a thriller, though it can also limit what a film asks of him. Being asked to look attractive and possibly dangerous is not always much of a part.
Work with Guillermo del Toro on The Devil’s Backbone (2001) put that capacity for darkness to use in a ghost story. His repeated collaborations with Mateo Gil led from Nadie conoce a nadie (1999) to the western Blackthorn (2011). Films such as Vantage Point (2008) and Transsiberian (2008) brought an international phase, rather than a clean departure from suspense.
We felt uneasy watching Noriega in Open Your Eyes, because his composure made it harder to dismiss the uncertainty as a thriller’s trick. That is where Amenábar gets something valuable from him: the acting gives us a reason to care when the plotting becomes overcomplicated. Yet the relationships are less carefully developed than the puzzle, and no amount of control from the lead can supply what is missing between the characters. The explanations disappoint too, after so much ingenuity in keeping us guessing.
We would like to see more parts that use his restraint without relying on the familiar suspicion attached to his looks. He need not signal every feeling for us to register it. Start with Open Your Eyes, provided an absorbing but overcomplicated thriller sounds like a reasonable evening.

Eduardo Noriega Gómez (born 1 August 1973) is a Spanish actor. Born in Santander, he moved to Madrid to pursue acting after studying law and music.
He first gained attention for his roles in Alejandro Amenábar’s Thesis (1996) as Bosco and Open Your Eyes (1997) as César, receiving a Goya Award nomination for Best Actor for the latter. He later starred in The Wolf (2004) and appeared in international films including Vantage Point (2008) as Enrique, TransSiberian (2008) and The Devil’s Backbone (2001). His television credits include The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (2023).
