Biography
Eleanor Witcombe (20 September 1923 – 21 October 2018) was an Australian screenwriter and playwright who worked in radio, film and television. She was born in Yorketown, South Australia, and studied at Brisbane Girls Grammar School and the National Art School in Sydney.
Witcombe began her career writing plays for children in the late 1940s and later contributed to radio and television series including The Mavis Bramston Show and Number 96. In the 1970s she adapted several Australian literary works for the screen, including Seven Little Australians (1973) for television and the feature films The Getting of Wisdom (1977) and My Brilliant Career (1979).
She won AFI Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay for both The Getting of Wisdom and My Brilliant Career. In 2014 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the arts.
