Biography
Elisabetta Montaldo is an Italian costume designer. Born in Genoa on 6 February 1950, she studied at the Liceo Artistico in Rome and taught painting in Nuoro, where she helped establish the Murales movement in Sardinia. She began working in costume design as an assistant to Nanà Cecchi on opera, theatre and film productions from 1983 to 1988.
As head costume designer she has worked on numerous films, including One Hundred Steps (2000), The Best of Youth (2003) and The Demons of St. Petersburg (2008). She has also designed for opera at the Arena di Verona and other venues, often in collaboration with director Giuliano Montaldo. Montaldo has received two David di Donatello awards for best costumes, for One Hundred Steps and The Demons of St. Petersburg, and further nominations including for The Best of Youth. She is also a painter and writer.
